Johan Thor

Johan Thor is a classical guitarist born in 2007 in Vildbjerg, Denmark. He began playing the guitar at the age of eight at Herning Music School, where he studied with the renowned Karol Mruk, who sparked his passion and motivation for the instrument. He later spent a year at the Orkesterefterskolen in Holstebro, receiving instruction from Søren Normann Larsen. Currently, he is studying at MGK Midtvest under the guidance of Søren Normann Larsen and Jakob Bangsø.

With an impressive portfolio of performances at music festivals such as Klassiske Dage, the Orkesterefterskolen Chamber Music Festival, Søbygaard Literature Festival, and the Classical Guitar Retreat in Scotland, as well as collaborations with renowned artists including Andreas Brantelid, Michala Petri, Erlendis Quartet, Tõnu Kõrvits, and Ensemble Midtvest, Johan has already established himself as part of the elite among young classical guitarists.

Johan has had the privilege of receiving masterclasses from some of Denmark’s leading guitarists as well as internationally acclaimed artists such as Carlo Marchione, Roberto Aussel, Petra Poláčková, Pavel Steidl, Thomas Viloteau, Matthew McAllister, Matthew Cochran, Jesper Sivebæk and Frederik Munk Larsen

Johan has also participated in the prestigious and highly regarded competitions Anna Amalia Competition for Young Guitarists 2025 and the International Competition for Young Guitarists “Andrés Segovia” 2024 in Germany, where he achieved outstanding results among the world’s most talented young guitarists.

Johan's Repertoire

His repertoire spans everything from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods to contemporary classical music. Johan also has a strong interest in chamber music and has performed with a wide range of ensembles featuring piano, flute, cello, violin, recorder, guitar, and viola. His main duo, however, is Thor & Fröhlich Duo, with which he regularly performs.
